How much does a fractional CIO cost? 2026 rates, retainers, and pricing models
Fractional CIO cost explained with public 2026 benchmarks: hourly rates, monthly retainers, project fees, and a full-time salary comparison for mid-market manufacturers and distributors.
A fractional CIO usually costs far less than a full-time technology executive, but “less” is not a budget. This guide pulls together published 2026 market benchmarks so you can estimate what fractional CIO support might cost, compare it with a full-time hire, and choose a pricing model that fits the work.
Every figure below comes from a third-party source linked in the text and listed at the end. These are market ranges, not EdgePoint’s prices. Your actual cost depends on scope, hours, and complexity.
The short answer
- Hourly rates: Go Fractional’s live benchmark puts the average fractional CIO rate at $205 an hour, with the middle 50% of observed rates between $150 and $250 an hour (Go Fractional). FractionalCXO.to’s 2026 guide cites $200 to $450 an hour depending on seniority (FractionalCXO.to).
- Monthly retainers: Go Fractional estimates $7,800 to $13,000 a month at about 13 hours a week. FractionalCXO.to puts typical retainers at $5,000 to $15,000 a month for 10 to 20 hours a week.
- Project fees: Published ranges for defined initiatives run from about $15,000 to $50,000 (Epicasta) up to $75,000 (FractionalCXO.to).
- Full-time comparison: The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a May 2024 median annual wage of $171,200 for computer and information systems managers, and $174,790 for those working in manufacturing, before benefits (BLS).
How fractional CIOs are priced
Monthly retainer
A fixed monthly fee for a defined level of involvement, such as a number of hours or days each month. FractionalCXO.to describes it as the most common model and notes that many retainers start with a 90-day commitment before moving to month to month. A retainer suits ongoing leadership: regular leadership meetings, roadmap ownership, provider oversight, and decisions as they come up.
Hourly or day-rate advisory
You pay for the time used. Epicasta lists $200 to $500 an hour or $1,500 to $3,500 a day (Epicasta). This works for occasional advice, a second opinion on a vendor proposal, or a planning workshop, but monthly costs are less predictable.
Fixed-fee assessment or project
A defined deliverable for an agreed fee: a technology assessment and roadmap, an ERP or system selection, or oversight of one initiative. This is a common way to start, because both sides learn how the work fits before committing to an ongoing cadence.
What drives the price
The published sources agree on the main factors:
- Hours and cadence. Time commitment is the biggest lever. Advisory-only arrangements cost less than active, weekly leadership.
- Complexity. Multiple plants or warehouses, an ERP that touches every department, operational technology on the shop floor, and many vendors all add work.
- Compliance and risk. Customer security requirements, cyber insurance controls, and CMMC for defense suppliers require scarcer expertise. FractionalCXO.to estimates a 10% to 15% premium for manufacturing and a larger premium for government contracting.
- Scope. Strategy and oversight cost less than hands-on operational leadership of an IT team.
- Experience. Leaders who have already handled your type of problem at your scale tend to charge more and ramp up faster.
Typical ranges by company size
Two published sources break retainers down by headcount. ExecRoster labels its figures as illustrative, so treat both as planning ranges rather than quotes.
| Company size | Typical monthly retainer | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 50 to 100 employees | $3,000 to $7,000 | FractionalCXO.to |
| 100 to 300 employees | $7,000 to $12,000 | FractionalCXO.to |
| 300 to 500 employees | $10,000 to $18,000 | FractionalCXO.to |
| Under 200 employees | $3,000 to $8,000 | ExecRoster (illustrative) |
| 200 to 500 employees | $8,000 to $18,000 | ExecRoster (illustrative) |
Fractional CIO vs. full-time CIO salary
A full-time hire costs more than the salary. BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation data for June 2026 shows benefits make up 30.0% of private-industry employer compensation costs, with wages and salaries at 70.0% (BLS ECEC).
As an illustration only: if the $171,200 BLS median wage represents 70% of total cost, the loaded cost is roughly $245,000 a year, before bonuses or recruiting fees. Go Fractional runs a similar calculation and estimates a $250,000 loaded annual cost for a full-time hire, compared with about $127,200 a year for a fractional CIO at 13 hours a week (Go Fractional).
Two cautions apply. First, the BLS category includes IT directors and managers, not only chief information officers, so CIO pay is often higher. FractionalCXO.to estimates full-time CIO total cost at $200,000 to $400,000 or more a year. Second, the comparison only holds if the work is genuinely part-time. If you need someone managing a large IT team every day, a full-time leader may be the right answer.
Is there a “fractional CIO salary”?
Not usually. Fractional CIOs are typically independent advisors or firm-based consultants paid through a retainer, project fee, or hourly rate, not a salary. That is why hourly rates look high next to salaries. Go Fractional notes that its $205 average hourly rate equals about $426,400 a year if worked full time, but a client only pays for the hours the engagement uses.
Does a fractional CIO work for mid-market companies?
For many mid-market manufacturers and distributors, yes. These companies face enterprise-level decisions, such as ERP replacement, cybersecurity requirements from customers and insurers, and AI adoption, but often do not have enough ongoing executive technology work to fill a full-time role. A fractional CIO fits best when:
- An internal IT manager or managed service provider handles daily operations, but no one owns strategy.
- A major system decision, acquisition, or security requirement is approaching.
- Leadership wants a technology roadmap tied to the business plan and someone accountable for it.
It fits less well when the business needs full-time, hands-on management of a large IT department.
What about a fractional CISO or CAIO?
Security and AI leadership are priced the same ways. For fractional CISO and virtual CISO services, vCSO.ai compiled published provider rates and found mid-market monthly retainers clustering roughly between $3,000 and $12,500, while noting that no independent survey of actual invoices exists (vCSO.ai). Go Fractional’s benchmark for fractional CISOs is $7,800 to $12,400 a month at about 13 hours a week (Go Fractional CISO). The models, what a retainer includes, and how that role compares with a full-time hire or an MSP security add-on are covered in how much a fractional CISO costs. Who should own strategy when an MSP already runs daily IT is covered in fractional CIO vs managed IT provider.
How to budget for a fractional CIO
- List the decisions ahead. Write down the technology decisions and risks the business faces in the next 12 months.
- Estimate the time they need. Decide whether you need occasional advice, a defined project, or a regular monthly cadence.
- Start with a defined scope. An assessment and roadmap gives you a deliverable and a clear view of the ongoing work before you commit.
- Agree what is included. Confirm deliverables, meeting cadence, response expectations, exclusions, and how extra work is handled.
- Review after 90 days. Decide whether to continue, adjust the scope, or stop.
Questions to ask before you sign
- What will you deliver in the first 90 days?
- How many hours or meetings does the fee include, and what happens in a busy month?
- How will you work with our IT manager or managed service provider?
- Who owns the roadmap, documents, and decisions if the engagement ends?
- What experience do you have with businesses like ours?
How EdgePoint approaches it
